Most importantly, the cardshould convey the theme primarily through colours with minimal use of photographs and other visual elements.

Edited version for the final Love greeting card

After showing my friends the greeting card shown in Figure One, it was noted that the message: "Missing You" could not be conveyed clearly with just a heart and a wind chime. Thus, I had added in a small letter box at the bottom left corner to convey the message clearer and the effect did turn out better than the previous art pieces.

Figure One: Final Art piece

As shown in figure one, this is the final design for my greeting card on the theme -- love. While the background of the card is orange, I had chosen to use red and pink for the color of my figures. The color, orange was used for the background as it portrays a warm color scheme. Also to catch people's attention, I had used red for the heart shape as Mr. Reddy mentioned that red ranks first for attention catching. Besides that, a wind chime is used for this "Missing you" greeting card as sometimes it do remind us of people we missed when the chime "sounded" as the wind blew past. Overall, this design is simple as the assignment requires us to use minimal visual elements and play with colors.

Figure Two: Redo Art piece 1

I had did this card to replace the card shown on Figure three. Basically, the card is about: "The chemistry of love" and this lead to the usage of the symbol (overlapping ovals) for chemistry which is shown in Figure two. I had used a blue background for this greeting card as it portray a calm and soothing theme. Nevertheless, I was told that the greeting card does not seem to portray the meaning of love although the symbol used do portray it as being something related to chemistry. It also seems that the impact of using the symbol covers the love theme. Thus I was suggested not to use the symbol and I could have used pink for the heart shape hidding behind the symbol and forefront of the background. Then I came to a conclusion of redesigning another greeting card that would depict the love concept --- represented in Figure One.

Figure Three: First Attempt

My first attempt for this love greeting card is represented by the picture in Figure Three. Initially I had wanted to give it a classic look with my parents photographs attached in the centre. I had used back for the background and yellow for the foreground color to render a classic, traditional, old feeling. However, it does not turn out as planned. However, a valuable lesson learnt was that I should have used a warm, loving color to represent love. Black despite being a strong color to be used, with proper color combination it might turn out alright. Also, black could be used if it is only for the border and not as much as using it for the entire background where the big portion of black background might turn people off. However, this again depends on the occassion/situation that the card is to be used. It is also of vital essence to take note of the meaning of the color used for the cards. For instance, black and white is often depicted for sad occassions like depression, darkness, death, despair, dread, etc. Hence, I conclude that we should black with carefully and not used it for unappropriate occassion like Valentine's Day unless there is strong color combination.

Poster for assignment four

Assignment Four

Class Activity

We are required to pick two words from the instructor and use basic elements (line and dot) to create 2 abstract / semi-abstract representative images. This was a rather simple sketch as there is not much stuff for us to twit about for this word and it is quite clear-cut. While it is easy to convey the meaning of “straight”, we faced difficulty in conveying the meaning of “odd” with images. Our initial idea of drawing a big shaded circle in the centre of a group of small shaded circles was commented as being too simple. Thus, we went on to brainstorm on ways to convey the meaning of “odd”. We continued to develop two more ideas where we agreed that the image in Figure Twenty-Three was a rather different one as compared to the previous figure. We thought of presenting the “odd” in another way where everything shown is joined except that the man is a joined figure and stands out of the entire drawing. This activity had taught us on the various skills for generating ideas for representing things and the importance of grouping similar things together to convey its belonging as a group.

Poster for Assignment Four

Requirement:

This assignment we are required to design a poster on "save" theme and it can be a poster of saving anything. Basically, the poster is supposed to covey the meaning through layout.

Final Edited copy of art piece

As shown above is the final copy of my art piece where I had changed according to the comments listed below. Most importantly, the font for the title had been changed to one that is not difficult to read.

For this assignment, I had decided to design a poster on saving for the credit bills otherwise the person would face problems with the piled up credit bills as shown on the poster. Also, I had used red for the heading with a supposingly retro font. The red font is also supposed to catch people's attention calling them to save for their bills. Then they will read the body text and subsequently look at the drawing on the bottom left.

Valuable comments given by my tutorial mates and tutor:

I should change the font for my heading as it is not clear

The color of the heading font appears to be very loud

I might want to consider changing the lighting of the poster to be shone from top right hand corner to the bottom left side where the pile of bills are located at.

Lastly, I might want to add some "credit card picture/illustration" on the pile of bills instead of typing out the word: "Bills".

This assignment is indeed a tough one as we have to convey/communicate a message only through the use of pictures and limited amount of words. Nevertheless it is also a learning lesson for me as it teaches me on visualising the way a poster should look like and the positioning of items in the poster is very important. I would say that the positioning is important because it allows people to look through in the order that you want to communicate the message. Also the color scheme matching skills are important.

*Changes to be made for the poster...Will be uploaded soon.

Photographs For Assignment Three

Assignment Three

* Dedicating this post to my polytechnic and secondary school mates. Without the help from them, this assignment would not be completed in time. Thank you very much!

In week 4, the class exercise and week assignment had taught us ways to understand the techniques of visual representation. The following would provide an insight into the problems faced in presenting a story with only pictures/drawings and not words.

Class Activity

Figure Eighteen: Sketch of girl looking at the sea

For the class activity, I was supposed to find a subject from any part of the school and draw it in ways that tells a story. Initially, I thought of drawing a scene with a girl looking at the sea (Refer to Figure Eighteen) where it suggests the girl’s intention to commit suicide. However, this might also be an indication of her being mesmerized in the scenery. It was highlighted that the sketch does not portray emotion. This is probably due to me making up the scene out of imagination and not from something I have experienced. Thus I made an effort to roam about the school for ideas…

Figure Nineteen: Sketch of Girl sitting on the stairs at the entrance of AS7

After walking around, I spotted a girl sitting on the stairs of AS7’s entrance and she caught my attention. To rectify the mistake made in Figure Eighteen, I had paid special attention to the girl’s expression and action. I guessed by doing so, it would allow me to have a better understanding of the girl’s emotion and communicates the message through sketches. The focus point of the sketch is her expression and the car adds in context to the entire sketch. From this exercise, I realised that in order to get the correct message across, it is essential for one to not only draw well but also put in emotions into the drawing.

Week Assignment

For this exercise, I thought of telling a story whereby audiences’ misunderstanding involves the photographer. They were supposed to think that she had asked the male model to shoot nude photographs. Initially, I encountered problem in finding objects to represent this as I could not possibly get someone to pose nakedly. Thus, I went to the Internet to research more about our body parts’ characteristics and reach a conclusion of using the upper arm to represent the naked body. This has led to the usage of a closed up shoot of the upper arm. It is to be noted that when the photograph is placed vertically, the upper arm would resemble the body shape of a naked person. Thus people would misinterpret the story with a lady photographer requesting the male model to shoot nude photographs. Besides that, I had encountered problems in handling constrains like the perception concept which explains the dissimilarity in what we think we are seeing and what we are actually seeing. As an illustration of constrains encountered, for photograph 6 I had to decide on whether the male model should appear at the forefront (bigger scale) or the female photographer should appear at the forefront instead. Ultimately, I had chosen the former as this scene should focus more on his expression after being offered some incentives by the photographer. This would serve as an example of nonsymmetrical balance with the larger scale of the male model balancing the smaller scale photographer on the left. Thus, the proposed balance is more interesting to look at than symmetrical balance in general.

On top of this, I had faced difficulty in capturing the right expression as the expression I had in mind does not match that of what the male model has in mind. However, this problem was minor and resolved after several tries. I had also learnt that the picture frame has to capture all the essential elements/ parts of the model and exclude unnecessary stuff like chopped off leg of the photographer when the photograph was supposed to contain only the male model. Also, the viewfinder should be perceived as a frame instead of a key hole in order to take excellent photographs without focusing selectively and chopped off essential parts of the pictures. I had selected an uncomplicated background for this exercise as it will not steal attention from my subjects. Lastly, I discovered that not all photographs developer could develop photographs with the same color scheme as it appears on the camera and computers. According to the tutor, the difference in color could be due to the vendors not changing its printers’ ink cartridge. It could also be due to the changing of brightness of digital photographs by the developer to his perceived standardized brightness.

Photographs for Assignment Three

1. Story starts off with a girl shooting photographs of model (Male model pose 1)

2. The photographer continues takingshoots while the male model pose (Model pose 2)

3. Thereafter the photographer showed her unsatisfied face as she is not satisfied with the poses of the male model

4. Thus the photographer shows the male model a photo requesting him to shoot that pose

5. After the male model saw that photo, he was shocked and refused to take nude photos as shown in the photograph by the photographer

6. Being rejected by the male model to take the desired photograph, the photographer attempt to entice him with money.

7. After considering, the male model agreed to take up the assignment and started to pose with a sleeveless shirt

8. Subsequently, the photographer take shoots of the male model's arm (45 degree pose)

9. Then the photographer zoom in and take photographs of the model's arm (90 degree pose)

10. Lastly, the story ends with a closed up shoot of the muscles of the upper arm which resembles the curvy body shape of a person both standing up or lying down. (This is also the photograph that the lady photographer showed the male model in the fourth scene)

Basically, the story strives to create a misunderstanding at the start where the audiences would misunderstand the photographer. They were supposed to think that she had asked the male model to shoot nude photographs. However, the photograph that the the lady showed the model is not nude photograph but a closed up shoot of the upper arm. The upper arm resembles the body shape of a naked person, thus people would misunderstood that the lady asked the male model to shoot nude photographs.

Drawings from Assignment Two

Assignment Two

Class Activity

Figure Eleven: Class Activity on iconic and indexic representation

For the class activity, we were expected to form a group of 2 and create iconic and indexic representations of the chosen object within 45 minutes. An iconic representation is a photograph or realistic illustration which provides a high degree of fidelity to a particular object, and is usually easy to recognize. On the other hand, indexic representation is a kind of drawing which is depicted by suggestion. With the understanding of the two terms, we had first chosen to come up with a rough sketch of a stalk of rose that shows a high degree of resemblance of a rose (as shown in picture 1 of Figure Eleven). Initially, we thought of drawing thorny stalks similar to picture 2 of Figure Eleven. However, it was commented that the thorny stalk could suggest not only rose. It is really kind of tough and challenging to come up with a draft that would only suggest it as being a rose and not any other types of flowers. After brainstorming for some time, we had managed to overcome constrains of representing a rose by drawing the petals in a different aspect such as the one depicted in part 3 of Figure Eleven. In that drawing, we had pencil in the thorns with triangular shapes as well. Generally, with the design of the rose petals and thorns, it had probably provided a better suggestion of it being a rose as compared to that of Figure 10’s picture 2.This exercise has gave us a better understanding of the iconic and indexic concepts as well.

Week Assignment

For the week assignment, we are supposed to select an object or activity or location and create a representative image of the object. After which we have to distill the image through process of abstraction with at least 5 levels of abstraction from realistic to abstract. Followed by, we are required to indicate the point at which the object looses its specific identity and communicates generic meaning by marking an arrow below the drawing. Then the image will be selected and developed into a symbol. Basically, this assignment has indeed helped me to understand and overcome constrains/problems of representation. Also, it helps us to develop skills in controlling visual message. The specific learning process would be described in greater detail in the following section.

This could be considered as one of the most difficult assignment of all as the process of choosing the right object to distill is undeniably challenging. Besides that, the distillation of objects had to be also one which is well thought out else it would loses its generic. The following would elaborate more on the processes undergone, with me starting off by brainstorming a few ideas for distillation. At first, I thought of distilling images of computer speaker and crocodile (Refer to Figures Twelve and Thirteen). After seeking friends’ comments, I found out that these were not properly distilled. Hence, I had faced constrains/problems of representing them as symbols. However, the problem was solved after researching for more information.

Most importantly, I had learnt one valuable lesson from the abstraction drawings done by one of my tutorial mates – Zhen Ying. She had chosen to abstract a giraffe but not of any particular breed, which had resulted in a not very clear abstraction. Hence, I came to a conclusion that in order to distill an animal well, certain breeds of crocodile with distinct features have to be chosen. Otherwise, the final distilled image most probably would not display a clear distinction between one that convey specific and generic meaning. After taking into consideration of several objects’ constrains, I had decided to distill a convertible car as portrayed in Figure Fourteen.

Initial Ideas

Figure Twelve: Initial consideration of distilling crocodile

(Sorry, for some reason I am not able to upload Figure Thirteen (1) to the blog. Do refer to my learning Journal for the specific drawing)
Figure Thirteen: Initial consideration of distilling speakers

Figure Thirteen (continued): Initial consideration of distilling speakers

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Final Idea: Drawings done on the sketch book

Figure Fourteen: Sketches of car at different level of abstraction

Figure Fourteen (Continued): Sketches of car at different level of abstraction
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drawings done with the help of Macromedia Fireworks MX

Figure Fifteen: Sketches of car at different level of abstraction

Figure Sixteen: Final Symbol

For this assignment, I had decided to use a convertible car for abstraction and it is presented in Figures Fourteen, Fifteen and Sixteen. To start with, I drew a top view of the convertible car and distill the drawing by first not putting in the specific details like colors and linings of the seats. At this stage the specific meaning of it being portrayed as a convertible car --- Chrysler Dodge Viper car, is still maintained. However, as I went on to remove the specific details; the drawing loses its specific meaning of being a certain car's brand as shown in drawing 3 of Figure Fourteen. Nevertheless, the drawing would still retain its generic meaning of being a convertible car despite losing its specific meaning. After which, I had continued to distill the drawing by taking away all the specific detail of the car and stop at drawing 6 of Figure Fifteen. For drawing 6, it still conveys the generic meaning of it being a car with 2 symbols of the seats and head light represented inside the rectangle. I had chosen to stop drawing at drawing 6 of Figure Fifteen is because the drawing would no longer convey any generic meaning if I were to continue to distill the picture. Hence, for this distillation, the symbol is depicted in Figure Seventeen.

Indeed, some valuable lessons were drawn from this assignment where it is noted that there is a need for careful selection of object for distillation. The reason being some objects like toothbrush does not have specific characteristics or breed for us to distill except an electronic toothbrush. Thus, the entire distillation of conventional toothbrush might not result in clear distinction between objects that convey specific and generic meaning. One other lesson learnt would be that we could continue to distill the drawing infinitely but it somehow would lose its purpose and it would even loses its generic meaning.

Drawings from Assignment One

Assignment One requirement:

For this assignment, I was supposed to select two words which best describes my character. After which, I have to come up with 8 design concepts for the chosen words (two concepts -- one on things I love and one on things I hate). Next, I have to develop 2 drawings – each chosen from the 2 concepts and present my selected designs on A5 paper. Lastly, one drawing has to be chosen out of two. Basically, from this assignment I learnt the importance of understanding and internalizing elements of design process. After undergoing this process, I had managed to overcome some of the difficulties faced in representing the hate and love concepts with my name. Through this exercise, some important techniques such as the idea generation and basic production techniques were acquired. The skills learnt from this assignment could also be applied to other assignments where it taught us the importance of research for ideas and the possible materials available. The following would explain more on the learning process I had undergone for this particular assignment.

Classroom activity

Figure One: Two “love” concepts with four sketches each

Figure Two: Two concepts (one “love” & one “hate”) with four sketches each

We were supposed to brainstorm ideas to facilitate the sketching process. I had started off by listing down the items that I love and hate of which it includes ideas of me loving and hating ice cream and roses and dogs respectively. After conceptualizing the ideas, I had decided to represent the idea of me loving ice cream, stick gal and roses as depicted in part 1, 2 and 3 (circled numbers) of Figure One). Initially, I had faced difficulties in developing the ice cream design as my drawing for melting ice cream is not done properly and it turned out to be very stiff originally. Thus, I went home to research more on “melting ice cream” and came out with a better design as depicted in part one of Figure One. I had encountered problems representing my excitement for ice cream at the start as well. However, I had come to a decision of using spring to convey my enthusiasm (as shown in picture three of Figure One’s part 1) after gathering some information over the internet. As spring has bouncy characteristics, by using spring it will aid me in representing my excitement for ice cream.

While part one of Figure One strives to communicate my love for ice cream, part two of Figure One was derived from the idea of using sticks to represent my fancy for stick related stuff. I had thought of using stick girl, bamboo and match sticks to represent the design. The representation of stick girl (as shown in 1st two pictures of Figure One’s part 2) was rather a tough one as I have to think of ways to sketch the stick girl in different flexible positions to represent the alphabets of my name. It was also meant to convey the message of a person loving flexible rules.

Besides having ice cream and stick related sketches, I had drawn another four on “loving roses”. Likewise, I had made an effort to research on the different components of the roses and used some of it in my sketches as shown in Figure Two part 3. Basically, I wanted to portray my keenness through the use of different parts of roses. For instance, I had used a mixture of thorny stalks, leaves and roses to represent the alphabets. For these rose drawings, I have also examined the different views of roses from various angles, textures and the shape of leaves with the help of books and online sources. To depict elegancy, the rose is drawn in a lying position with a few more roses on it. There will also be different level of shading for the lying rose so to give it a classic feeling. Likewise, I had undergone similar thinking process when attempting to sketch the concepts on the hatred of dogs.

After presenting the 4 concepts to friends, I had chosen to work on the roses and dogs designs as both have somewhat communicated clearer message. However, it was highlighted that the intended message the “hate dogs” concept was not clear for the last sketch Figure Two’s part four. Also, sketches one and two of Figure Two’s part 3 were somewhat similar. Bearing in mind these valuable feedbacks, I had made some changes to the sketches and present them in Figure Three.

Process (1) - Sketches of thumbnails for assignment one

Figure Three: Two concepts (one “love” & one “hate”) with four sketches each

At this stage, I had designed 2 concepts where one is on "I Love Roses" (view sketches vertically from the top left column) and the other is "I hate Dogs" (view sketches vertically from the top right column). For the first drawing from the left column, I had in mind the concept of a bed of roses which forms up my name. It was rather a tough idea to be depicted as I have to think of ways to sketch the drawing in three dimensionally. Nevertheless, I had overcome this problem through researching for examples of “bed of roses”. On the other hand, I had used the branches of roses to form my name and add a fallen leaf on the "g" branch. I did not face much problem for this except for the coloring part where I have to think of the direction of the lighting which ultimately affects the leaves’ shading. For the third picture of my rose drawing, I had used leaves and roses to form my name and the leaves are shaded in black with a few rose buds protruding out from the leaves. For this, I did encounter problems of forming my name with roses. After researching, I had an idea of illustrating the alphabets with half cut leaves. Lastly for left column’s last sketch, I wanted to portray the roses in a classic view and managed to overcome the difficulty of depicting it classically through shading the roses with different reddish pink tones. The ultimate outcome was a successful one and I had received positive feedback for both sketches 3 and 4 of Figure Three’s part 1. On the whole, I had to decide on the types of red to use for the roses as different shades of red gives viewers different feel. Eventually, I had chosen to further develop third sketch of Figure Three’s part 1 due to its creativity and clarity of message conveyed.

As for the "I hate dog" concept, I had drawn my name on top of the spring with the intention of conveying hatred and fear for dogs. As mentioned earlier, having taking into consideration of the bouncy nature of springs, I had chosen to draw my name with springs attached below. As for the second and third sketch of Figure Three’s part two, I had used dog related objects for the sketches after browsing through dog related books. Lastly, to convey my hatred, I had decided to draw a dog running towards the right with my name slanted to the utmost left. In this sketch, my name tilted to the left as I would like to convey to the viewer that I had started running to the left after seeing the dog heading to the right. Ultimately, I had opted to work on the idea depicted in the last picture of Figure Three’s part 2 as it had conveyed the hatred message unambiguously.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Process (2) Chosen design from each category

Figure Four: Two sketches of rose concept

Figure Five: Two sketches of dog concept

Having received feedback that I should develop more ideas on the 3rd concept of the rose category and the last idea for the dog category, I had further developed two drawings each for the respective concepts. The first picture of the rose concept is similar to what is drawn in process one and I had drawn a rather abstract rose picture by twisting the rose and leaves to form my name (as shown in picture 2 of Figure Four). This idea was generated to highlight my character of being flexible when dealing with things as well. Additionally, it is also intended to be a classic sketch. Besides that, I had used the dog concept from picture four of Figure Three’s part 2 as it conveys a clear message. To put across a clearer message and also to test out the concepts, I had drawn a picture with a fierce dog and a "friendly" dog running towards the right (As shown in Figure Five). Trembled lines were also used to convey my fear for the dog.

On the whole, it is relatively difficult to convey a message through drawing as compared to face to face and writing communication. Personally I think it is rather easier to develop drawings communicating the love idea as compared to hatred version. To overcome these problems, not only did research work play a significant role, friends’ past experiences of drawing tips contribute a part to the development of drawings as well. For instance, my friend has shared tips on the types of markers to use to draw strokes giving different feeling to the drawing. On top of that, the need for instinct feeling towards the use of color is also imperative as different colors suggest different meaning. The skills learnt could also be applied to other modules as we could use the research, planning and managing skills to facilitate the accomplishment of project. Importantly, message to be communicated across should be represented unambiguously.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Process (3)Pre-Testing

Figure Six: Chosen design for “love roses” concept

At this stage, we were supposed to develop our design with the aid of use Adobe Photoshop. However, I had chosen to use Macromedia Fireworks MX 2004 as I am not familiar with the functions provided by Adobe Photoshop. Generally, I did not face much difficulty in using the pen and fill color tools as compared to my friends whom had struggled to use this function. If you would have notice, there is a difference in the solidity/brightness of the roses and dog prototypes! I had chosen to color the dog with color pencils first as the coloring effects that I wanted could not be achieved through coloring with the software. In addition, some of the colors from the software were very dull/stiff and they could not achieve the layered look I wanted for the dog drawing. Personally, I felt that colors and strokes for the dog would look livelier and more natural through hand coloring.

After the critique process by my tutorial mates, I had decided to choose the second drawing of Figure Four and made some changes commented accordingly. I had tried to redraw the rose forming the alphabet “N” further away from the "G" to depict a clearer message. Also, I had added an oval shape border to my drawing hoping to give attention to the rose picture. However, I was told that the picture became complicated due to the addition of border (as shown in Figure Six).

In this task, I learnt that the colors of drawings printed out on different types of papers (especially fanciful paper) would appear differently as compared to the color shown on the computer. For instance, the color of the roses on Figure Six had turned pinkish after printing on white shiny glossy paper, giving it a classic feel. On the other hand, differing in colors could also be due to the use of RBG color in the software application of which colors shown might differ from the actual print out of sketches. Hence it is vital to specify usage of CMYK color in the software application in order to get a print out with colors as depicted on the computer screen.

Figure Seven: Chosen design for “hate dog” concept

Taking heed of the comments given by my tutorial mates, I had combined the two concepts from Figure Five and come up with one as shown in Figure Seven. I had drawn the fierce dog from the first drawing of Figure Five and the "scared off" wordings from the second drawing of Figure Five. I had also created a tear off border behind the dog wanting to depict that the paper got torn off when the dog run through it. To put the last touches on the artwork, the drawing is mounted on a black piece of paper. However, I was told that the borders had complicated the drawing and it does not look as good as before. Hence, I had decided to make some changes of which valuable lessons were draw upon.

Revised Drawings

Figure Eight: Revised design for “love roses” concept

Figure Nine: Final revised design for “hate dog” concept

I had made some changes to my rose drawing where I had developed a bigger version of my drawing (within A5 size) without the border. From Figure Eight and Nine, I think the drawing is not as complicated as before and it can convey the message clearer. For the dog drawing, I had also taken out the borders where it really communicates a clearer message and does not appear as messy as before. On top of that, different feeling would results from different font usage. For instance, the use of fonts with leaves as shown in Figure Eight would portray a drawing related to flowers or even garden.

Figure Ten: Final revised design for “love roses” concept

However I had opted to change the font used in the rose picture (Figure Eight) to the font used in the artwork of Figure Ten as I was told the leaves on the alphabets made them illegible. Through this assignment, I had understood the importance of choosing right fonts for artworks as this will ultimately affect its overall “attractiveness”. Additionally, font faces have to be used circumspectly due to their diverse characteristics and projected feeling.

In conclusion, this assignment has also taught me the importance of paying attention to instructions given, especially when one works in the media industry. The concerns of cost to be incurred for printing explains the significance value attributed to careful interpretation of given instructions. It should also be noted that slight changes in the size of paper would result in rejection of drawing. Thus, we ought to ensure exact match of the size of our printed drawings with the specified criteria. Also, it is vital to specify CMYK colors when developing artwork with design application software.
