Assignment Four
Class Activity

We are required to pick two words from the instructor and use basic elements (line and dot) to create 2 abstract / semi-abstract representative images. These images have to convey meaning of the words with 1 image per word. Also, the images ought to communicate the meaning of the words through form (basic visual elements) and with the use of maximum two colors.
(Pictures will be uploaded soon ... As I faced difficulties in uploading the pictures)
In part 1 of Figure Twenty-Two’s sketch, it shows the images we had drew to represent the meaning of straight. This was a rather simple sketch as there is not much stuff for us to twit about for this word and it is quite clear-cut. While it is easy to convey the meaning of “straight”, we faced difficulty in conveying the meaning of “odd” with images. Our initial idea of drawing a big shaded circle in the centre of a group of small shaded circles was commented as being too simple. Thus, we went on to brainstorm on ways to convey the meaning of “odd”. We continued to develop two more ideas where we agreed that the image in Figure Twenty-Three was a rather different one as compared to the previous figure. We thought of presenting the “odd” in another way where everything shown is joined except that the man is a joined figure and stands out of the entire drawing. This activity had taught us on the various skills for generating ideas for representing things and the importance of grouping similar things together to convey its belonging as a group.
Poster for Assignment Four

Requirement:

This assignment we are required to design a poster on "save" theme and it can be a poster of saving anything. Then I am supposed to write a copy (text which goes on poster) of not more than 150 words. Basically, the poster is supposed to covey the meaning through layout.

Final Edited copy of art piece

As shown above is the final copy of my art piece where I had changed according to the comments listed below. Most importantly, the font for the title had been changed to one that is not difficult to read.

For this assignment, I had decided to design a poster on saving for the credit bills otherwise the person would face problems with the piled up credit bills as shown on the poster. Also, I had used red for the heading with a supposingly retro font. The red font is also supposed to catch people's attention calling them to save for their bills. Then they will read the body text and subsequently look at the drawing on the bottom left.

Valuable comments given by my tutorial mates and tutor:

  1. I should change the font for my heading as it is not clear

  2. The color of the heading font appears to be very loud

  3. I might want to consider changing the lighting of the poster to be shone from top right hand corner to the bottom left side where the pile of bills are located at.

  4. Lastly, I might want to add some "credit card picture/illustration" on the pile of bills instead of typing out the word: "Bills".

This assignment is indeed a tough one as we have to convey/communicate a message only through the use of pictures and limited amount of words. Nevertheless it is also a learning lesson for me as it teaches me on visualising the way a poster should look like and the positioning of items in the poster is very important. I would say that the positioning is important because it allows people to look through in the order that you want to communicate the message. Also the color scheme matching skills are important.

*Changes to be made for the poster...Will be uploaded soon.

Stay happy always!.
